Organized at Detroit, Michigan, the 1st Michigan Regiment Infantry mustered September 16, 1861. The following is only a partial synopsis of regiment activities. The regiment served in Maryland until May 1862, then in Virginia for the remainder of 1862, where the 1st Infantry was engaged in several battles, including Mechanicsville (June), Bull Run (August), and Fredericksburg (December). Elizabeth was the wife of Thomas Stewart. She lived in Bay City (Mich.) at 509 North Madison Street, 1915-19135, with a Mrs. Charles Fox. Thomas Stewart enlisted on July 17, 1861 at East Saginaw (Mich.) in Company F, 1st Michigan Infantry at age 21. On July 22, 1861 Thomas was mustered. He was discharged for disability at Mount Pleasant on April 24, 1863 due to wounds he had received in action. Thomas died by 1893. (No further information is available on the Stewarts.). First learned to ski in 1938. Joined the Army, became an officer, and was assigned to several locations, including Camp Hale and Camp Swift. Served at Kiska and in Italy. Awarded a Bronze Star for his service at Mt. Belvedere, and a Silver Star for his service at S. Benedetto Po. Principal unit was the Headquarters Company, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment.
